10 Hobbies to Try This Year
Instead of giving something up this year, why not aim for gaining something new?
If you are also looking for ways to ignite your creativity, and be intentional with your “me” time, you might want to try picking up a new hobby.
Thankfully, there are plenty of pastimes that you can do in the comfort of your own home, using one of our powerful and particularly suitable task lights, that (brace yourself) do not involve scrolling on Instagram.
1. Pick up needlework
A hobby to get you away from your screen and keep your hands busy: knitting or crocheting. Even watching how-to videos on YouTube is extremely satisfying. Have you been itching to make one of those Pinterest-worthy knit blankets? This feels like the perfect time to make your dreams a reality.
2. Learn an instrument
Bust out your recorder from elementary school because it is that baby’s time to shine. There is no better time to connect with your musical side, and YouTube has a plethora of videos to get you started, no matter the instrument you decide to rock out on.
3. Paint
Channel your inner Frida Kahlo and get to painting. You do not have to be an artist to pick up a paintbrush and get busy. If you want to go freehand, this painting kit from Amazon has everything you need to get started. Put on some of your favorite tunes, grab a glass of wine, and get artsy.
4. Learn how to apply your makeup
Who does not love a good before-and-after, trying out new techniques (mastering a perfect eyeliner, for instance) and getting the details on new product reviews. Some of our favorite beauty bloggers to learn from include Sita Gill and Kolaine Beauty Lounge.
5. Learn to code
Coding is a real transferable skill that can mean big things for your career, whether you’re hoping to make a job switch or you’re just interested in broadening your knowledge base for down the road.
6. Take up content creation
Learning the groundwork of photography can help you up your game and take better pictures. Watching YouTube videos to learn about photography basics, tips/tricks, and mistakes to avoid can help you understand the camera you already have or inspire you to invest in one.
7. Practice journaling
Writing about the day’s happenings or whatever is weighing on your heart can be therapeutic, but the art of journaling does not end there. Grab your favorite pen, a notebook, the right desk light, and you are set.
8. Try miniature modeling
Can’t fly anywhere on vacation? You can still enjoy building planes, race cars, or anything else you can decorate to give yourself a scale miniature dream world.
9. Join a virtual book club
You may have more time to read, why not discuss the works? Get some friends in a video call or find a group online. Or join the 2022 Goodreads Reading Challenge and track progress towards your reading goals.
10. Cooking & Baking
There is something about mastering a new recipe and switching up your routine to make you feel accomplished. Everyone is baking bread right now, but do not feel the need to limit yourself—no one is ever going to turn down cookies, muffins, scones, or cupcakes!
In 2022, ditch your typical resolutions that leave you feeling stressed out, and instead, opt for resolutions that make you feel good, you will have no trouble sticking with them at all. And remember, good lighting is fundamental for any visual work. Our lamps put your passion in the best light – the spotlight.
